Whether you are a snowbird who’s packing up for the season,  a family heading out for a long summer or winter vacation or anything in between,  you want to make sure your home is protected while you are gone. By following the steps in the vacation preparation checklist not only will give yourself the gift of peace of mind, but you will also help mitigate the potential for damage. Preparing your home for vacation  is also time well spent.

There is nothing worse than coming back to a dirty house or a house that doesn’t feel welcoming.  So here are some tips to keep in mind before heading for long vacations.  They ensure our stays intact in our absence and when we return, it is seamless to transition back.

Clean Up!

Clean your house as best as you can. One thing I hate about coming back from a nice relaxing trip to a messy or smelly  house or apartment. So before I leave, I try to spend as much time cleaning . So, when I will be at home,  it will be welcoming.

Clean out the fridge

If you are leaving your house for more than a few days chances are you got something in your fridge, that will definitely spoil and is going to  spoil your fridge. Take a few minutes to take out your stuff before vacation.  Make sure your fridge is also nice and clean.

Do and put away the laundry

Chances are you might come home with laundry as well and so you don’t want a  pile of laundry then. So do your laundry before you move out.

Wash and put away the dishes

Since you are already cleaning out the refrigerator,  you are probably gonna have some dishes also. Now it’s time to make your dishes.

Water your plants

If you need, you can arrange for someone who will come and water your plants. Because plants are your apple of eyes. If you come home and find out that your plants have dried out, you will certainly not feel well. So, it is a must for your mental health to assign someone to look after your plants.

Take out the garbage

Take out the garbage,  it will prevent  you from nasty smells and your home will be refreshing.

Shut off your water valve

Look for your water meter. Usually there is a valve right after the meter. That is your main water valve that you want to shut off.

Turn down the heat at your water heater

Since there is no one at home using the hot water, you must turn it off. It will help reduce your electricity bill.

Turn down the thermostat to 55 degree F

It will also lower your bill.

Unplug all your electronic

Since there is no one at home, save some energy bill.

Put some lights on timer

The lights will turn on when it is dark and will turn off at daylight

Be careful what you post on social media

Because no one should know outside your home that your home is vacant.
