It’s never fun to get a stain on your clothes, but nothing is worse than a grease stain. One moment you’re eating a delicious slice of pizza, and the next you’re staring down at a large oil stain, wondering if you’ll ever be able to wear these jeans again.

Have no fear, there are numerous simple methods for removing grease and oil stains from clothing. Furthermore, most of them can be completed with items you already have in your home. So relax, reach for that second slice of pizza, and read on to learn how to get grease stains out of clothes.

The general rule of thumb when cleaning grease stains is that the sooner the better. Take advantage of any opportunities to treat the stain right away. Grease stains worsen as they sit and dry. The longer grease sits in your denim, the more difficult it is to remove the stain.

If you’re out and the grease monster strikes, resist the urge to throw your jeans in the corner when you get home. Don’t let the stain sit overnight. Pre-treat the stain with stain gel as soon as possible, then start washing in the morning.

Remove Grease Stains From Jeans

1. Dab the stain

Before you do anything else, take a paper towel and fold it in half. Gently dab the stain. This will help remove any excess oil or grease that may have seeped into the denim. Starting with this step will greatly simplify the process of removing the oil stain.

2. Use baking soda to treat the stain

Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and set aside for a few hours. Baking soda absorbs the oil, removing any grease from the fabric that cannot be removed with a paper towel.

After a few hours, if you have a small vacuum or one with a hose attachment, remove the excess baking soda. If you don’t have a vacuum, carefully brush away the baking soda. Again, the less oil there is to scrub out, the easier the cleaning will be.

3. Follow up with soap, water, and a toothbrush.

Ø  Next, apply a drop of mild dish soap directly to the stain. Dish soap works better than laundry detergent at breaking down and dissolving grease.

Ø  Next, take an old toothbrush or a soft sponge and gently scrub the stain until it becomes sudsy. Two or three minutes with a gentle hand should suffice.

Ø  Finally, rinse off the soap or place your jeans in the washing machine.

Tip

Before running your washer, add a color-safe laundry booster as an extra layer of defense.

4. Air Dry Instead of using your dryer.

It often takes several attempts to remove grease and oil stains from jeans. Furthermore, treating the stain with any type of heat can cause it to set deeper into the denim, making removal more difficult.

Your best bet is to avoid using the dryer altogether and instead line-dry or hang-dry your jeans until you’re certain the stain has been removed. If a spot remains, repeat the process until your jeans are as good as new.

If the baking soda and dish soap method fails, try spraying a little vinegar on the stain after removing the baking soda. This can also aid in breaking down the grease before washing.

Have you already thrown your jeans in the dryer? Don’t panic. If the stain persists, you can repeat the cleaning process, but this time use an enzyme-based cleaner as a pretreatment before washing.

 Happy cleaning!
