The Trash Bin

Cleaning and maintaining the Trash bin is vital to a healthy environment. We all have garbage in our homes. However, it gets the least importance. Most of the time, it receives insufficient attention. Failure to do so may result in the spread of bacteria and an unpleasant stench throughout the house. Also, unclean trash bin attracts pests such as maggots and flies.

When was the last time you thoroughly cleaned your garbage can? You may have taken out the trash, but you most likely did not clean the bin. Cleaning the garbage is not as difficult as you would imagine. You can easily clean your garbage can and maintain it germ-free by following a few simple steps.

Necessary materials needed:

  • Rubber gloves
  • A long handled brush or a scrubbing brush
  • Soap or disinfectant cleaner
  • Baking soda or vinegar
  • Water
  • Paper towels

Empty the trash bin:

The first step in cleaning the garbage can is to empty it fully. You can do it while wearing rubber gloves. If you believe that there are pests in the trash, be cautious when disposing of it. Remove the trash can and dispose of it properly, making sure not to spill any of it.

Rinse the trash bin

The next step is to rinse the garbage can. It is preferable to clean it in an open area. Rinse the bin with water to remove any buildup or residues that has accumulated on the inside or outside of the garbage can.

Apply the cleaning solution

Now, combine your choice of trash bin cleaner with warm water. It can be sprayed or applied on the trash can. If there is a cover, make sure you cover it as well. Use the solution on both the inside and outside of the can.

Scrub the Trash bin

After applying the solution, it must be scrubbed. Wear a rubber glove when doing so. Use a scrubbing brush or a long-handled brush. Scrub the inside and outside thoroughly with it. Scrub the can firmly if there is any sticky stuff. Be careful not to use too much force or you can damage the bin.

Rinse and dry the bin

After you’ve finished scrubbing, thoroughly rinse the bin. Make certain that no soap or cleaning solution residue remains. Rinse the bin at least 2-3 times on its inside and outside. Don’t forget to rinse the bin’s cover.

After rinsing, use a paper towel to dry it. Allow it to air dry before using it again. Place a trash bag inside before using it.

How to remove odor?

If there is a bad smell in the trash can, you can remove it with a simple DIY mixture. Use an equal parts water and vinegar solution, or sprinkle baking soda inside the bin. These natural remedies are efficient in eliminating odors and killing bacteria. Allow it to sit for some time. Then thoroughly rinse it with water.

How to prevent pests?

You can take some preventive actions to keep pests and maggots at bay.

1. Double bag the trash. It may help to prevent spills and decrease unwanted odors.

2. Place the food in a zipped bag and toss it. It will attract fewer pests.

3. At least once a month, wash the garbage can.

Some Tips

  • Clean the trash can on a sunny, breezy day.
  • Use water hose if available to clean the can.
